Gungahlin Drive Extension - Packages A & B

Extension of the Gungahlin Drive from Barton Highway to Glenlock Interchange for approximately 8km

Commenced:      November 2005

Project elements include: Bulk earthworks for the entire project, including 130,000m3 of blasting and 1.2million m3 of soft cut/fill.

Direct Factory Outlet Home Maker Hub (DFO) - Canberra

Construction of a 60,000 m2 retail outlet with a further 60,000 m2 of underground parking

Project elements include: Bulk excavation for building (370,000 m3) of which 95,000 m3 of drilling and blasting, structural retaining systems for excavation batters, peirs and footing systems for building and external civil works.

Princess Hwy Oak Flats to Dunmore Realignment - Kiama

Realignment of the dual carriageway highway for approximately 5km

Runway Extension - Canberra International Airport (CIA)

The extension of runway 35 and taxiway B by 630m within a 12 week program with minimal restrictions to airport operations.

Project elements include: Complete construction of runway and taxiway extension, including a flexible pavement of 1.2m depth, stormwater detention and floodway system, electrical and communications conduiting.

Achievements: Intelligent programming enabled Hewatt Earthworks to consistently place, compact and trim 9000 tonne of pavement gravel per day.  By stockpiling material from the commencement of the job, we were not restricted by our suppliers capability to produce only 3000 tonne of gravel per day and completed this job on time and under budget.

Horse Park Drive

Construction of a new 8.5km arterial road linking Gungahlin to the Federal Highway.

Project elements include: Bulk earthworks for the entire project, including 130,000m3 of blasting and 120,000m3 of soft cut/fill.

Achievements: Hewatt Earthworks were the first contractor to negotiate approval for blasting in the ACT with ACT Workcover, since the failed Canberra Hospital Implosion in 1998.

We were responsible for all coordination and control of blasting, which necessitated complete closure of the Federal Highway and Majura Rd and liaison with the control tower at Canberra Airport for each of the 24 shots fired.

Russell Offices North and South Compound - Russell

Restructuring of the road network within the Russell Precinct and the construction of roads to link Constitution Avenue and the Apex Roundabout to Russell Drive. The new roads and associating carparks, pass directly through two former high security compounds and eight former building footprint.

Project elements include: The Scope of constructed works included bulk and detailed earthworks, pavement, road furniture, water, fire services, sewer, stormwater, gas, electrical, communication and substantial concrete footings for the new secure perimeter.-

 

Barton Highway

Construction of 9km of dual carriageway highway on an existing single carriageway alignment, carrying 10,000 vehicle movements per day.

Project elements include: Bulk earthworks and detailed trimming, including 200,000m3 of cut to fill.  Hewatt Earthworks developed haulage diagrams for the entire project to enable pre placement of materials into stockpiles prior to changing traffic movements.

Achievements: Design, construction and operation of a signalised scraper crossing across the Barton Highway, enabling movement of 90,000m3 of material.  This measure ensured both vehicle and plant safety with minimal disruption to traffic flow.

Department of Defence Russell Offices Redevelopment    

Complete infrastructure reconfiguration and upgrade for the Russell Offices site to support the $200m redevelopment.

Project elements include: Clearing and grubbing, bulk earthworks, hydraulics, flexible pavement and landscaping.

Achievements: Hewatt Earthworks had to undertake our own thorough investigations and explorations to accurately locate all underground services, as the original 60 year old plans did not reflect the actual service location.  This enabled us to plan connections and disconnections while maintaining supply to critical Defence establishments.    



     

Canberra International Airport

Continual involvement over a 4 year period of the construction of the Brindabella Business Park , aircraft hangars and other specialist airport related construction.

Key Projects include:   

Building platforms - Buildings B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, Cafeteria, and a childcare centre.

Impulse Airlines Maintenance Hanger - Building Platform, Taxiway extension and car parks.

Special Purpose Aircraft Facility - Building Platform, Stabilization of pavements for aprons, Infrastructure upgrade, car parks and roads

 

 

Apex Roundabout - Russell

The Apex Roundabout was the pinnacle construction on behalf of the National Capital Authority to mark the 3rd Apex of the Parliamentary Triangle.  This project required specialist surface treatments to match the significance of the project and all of these aspects were constructed by Hewatt Earthworks.

National Museum of Australia - Acton

Redevelopment of the former Canberra Hospital site and the construction of the National Museum of Australia.

Project elements include: Bulk earthworks for building pads and road works, detail and flexible pavement. Coordination with other trades was an essential necessity, due to the complex nature of this site.

Capricorn Park, Barton Highway, Hall

Upgrading and development of a horse breeding facility into a specialist horse training complex for Sydney Metropolitan and interstate racing.

Project elements include: Two training tracks (1.8km, 2.2km), roads, waterways, building platform, footings, flexible pavement, 2 coat seal, underground services, environmental control measures, on-site design, preparation and implementation of a Soil and Water Management Plan.
